In the ground or in planters, summer bulbs provide gardens with pleasant a touch of freshness. In regard to their high sensitivity to the cold and their ephemeral beauty, it is imperative to take care of them. Their diversity should be better known, both in terms of their exoticism and originality. In addition, they form wonderful flower clumps in summer and these sought-after flowers are also great for making bouquets.
Summer bulbs are among plants that are easily grown in the garden. Planting and maintaining them requires very little effort and knowledge. Keep in mind however that these summer bulbs should be planted in spring, as they fear frost.
Where and when should summer bulbs be planted?
For starters, summer flower bulbs are sensitive to the cold. For this reason, they can only be planted between the beginning of March and the end of May, even though the weather is still relatively cool during this period. Planting is carried out once the ground reaches a temperature close to 55 degrees (13 ° C). Below this temperature, the bulbs are very likely to rot. Apart from tuberous begonias and buttercups, these bulbs need strong sunlight. Some summer bulbsn such as dahlias, are usually planted next to other plants.
How to plant summer bulbs?
After determining the location where the bulbs will be planted, a number of solutions are available. Either start by digging a trench to get a flower clump, or make several holes for bulbs of which the depth will range from 1.2 to 2-inches (3 to 5 cm), or plant several bulbs in each hole. At this shallow depth, summer bulbs will be able to take full advantage of the ground’s heat. Using a rake, air out the soil to loosen it and remove lingering small stones and weeds. Without pushing them in, the bulbs will be placed firmly in the ground with their pointed tips upwards.
The maintenance of summer bulbs
To take full advantage of the long blooming period of almost all summer bulbs, it is strongly recommended to plant them on warm ground that is sheltered from the prevailing winds. These plants need a well-tilled humus soil humus to which high quality potting soil will be added for them to thrive. Moreover, to prevent the rods from bending under the flowers’ weight, a strong staking is required. Finally, it is also necessary to regularly water the clumps’ base to ensure their good health.
